WWF UCO receives vehicles from UNDP

May 11, 2012, KAMPALA WWF-Uganda Country Office has received equipment from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Uganda Country Office. The equipment, which included two vehicles, was handed over to WWF-Uganda by the Minister of Water and Environment Hon. Maria Mutagambwa.

Speaking at the event, the minister applauded UNDP for their support towards the conservation of the environment in Uganda. She highlighted rampant encroachment on wetlands, deforestation and unsustainable exploitation of natural resources as the key environmental challenges facing the country.

She called for the strengthening of technical and institutional capacity to address the challenges and ensure the full attainment of the Millennium Development Goal No.7, which is about ensuring environmental sustainability. She cited the need to review and update the country’s environmental policies and laws to make them more relevant to the changing situations in order to address emerging issues such as climate change and the impacts of oil and gas exploration.

The equipment is to facilitate the implementation of the UNDP/ Government of Uganda (GoU) project, Strengthening Sustainable Environment and Natural Resource Management, Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in Uganda being implemented by WWF. On February 17th, the UNDP Country Office approved the work plan of the project and an annual budget of USD $ 1.7million for 2012.
